What is a solar inverter?
Otherwise called a PV inverter, a solar inverter can convert to alternating current the direct current
produced from photo voltaic cell present in solar panels. The alternating current will be of the
frequency at which the domestic appliances can be used.

Types of solar inverters
Solar inverters are of three types.
The first kind is the stand alone type. They are used in systems that are isolated and are not tied
up with grid systems. The power comes from the DC current that is provided by the array of
photovoltaic cells present as internal batteries. Sometimes, there is a facility to draw power from AC
source when it is available.
The next type is the grid tie inverters. The phase of the sine wave of the current produced is
equivalent to that from the grid. These are similar to those meant for utility supply. These inverters
do not work when there is a power outage. They shut down for safety reasons.
The third type is the battery backup inverter type. These types can supply current for utility for
selected loads. They have an internal charger with which they can manage the charge and the excess
energy can be exported to the grids.

Maximum power point tracking helps maximise power
The optimum power achievement is through a technique called maximum power point tracking.
The technique helps to achieve the maximum power from the array of photovoltaic cells. According
to the environmental conditions, the tracking will determine the power produced against the
resistance variation and adjust accordingly.
Anti is landing protection can stop power feed to islands
The inverters are equipped with anti is landing protection feature. When the inverters are tied to the
grid, they feed power to the islands. When the power from the grid is shut down or stopped, the
inverters should also do the same. This is a safety measure for workers. The workers will expect the
area to be free from power. If not, there will be power fed to the islands which can prove bad to the
consequences...
